I love Patrick Ness’s books. I love his characters, most particularly the emotional depth and the author’s refusal to write the “easy option”. He never goes for the simplistic black and white portrayal but creates real people undergoing real thoughts, decisions, issues, concerns and difficulties. I’m not going to rehash the blurb, but I’ve never been disappointed yet in a Ness book; he doesn’t hesitate to explore different worlds (whether the dystopian, the fantastical or the whimsical and magical world of the chapter heading excerpts of this book) and he never fails to captivate.
