Reading Well Books on Prescription film released by NHS Choices

NHS Choices has created a short film profiling the Reading Well Books on Prescription scheme.

The film looks at the value of self-help reading and provides information about the Reading Well Books on Prescription core list and the common mental health conditions that are covered by the scheme.

In the film Martin Burton, from the Society of Chief Librarians, talks about how the scheme encourages libraries and health professionals to work together: “It’s very much a collaborative process – [libraries] provide the books, the health organisations promote them. I think together we can make a difference to people’s lives.”

Peter Hirst, from Safe Inside Safe Outside and rethinkyourmind, reflects on his experience of self-help reading: “I’ve found [self-help reading] to be an amazing help… Certain diagnoses can cause people to feel very insular – I’ve experienced quite intense times of this. Reading is a wonderful thing, because it’s something you can take on in your own time and as you feel ready for it.”
